I picked up a Windom Weponary AR15 from that was only a couple months old and had only a coulple hundred rounds through it. Previous owner said it was shooting just fine then KABOOM. The lower half seems fine. The upper has expanded, the bolt carrier busted, and the case, minus the head, was stuck in the barrel. The bullet was not in the barrel. I disassemble the rifle and the barrel "looks" fine. Any ideas what could have happened? Would you trust the lower and the barrel?

I know what could have happened....did it go boom when the bolt was being closed? If yes then all signs likely point to a high primer. It happens. I know this from personal experience.

If not then most likely wrong powder in the cartridge. It's kind of hard to overcharge a .223 case. It can happen but I'd look to the wrong powder first.

Would I trust it? Yup....sure would. When mine went kaboom I simply got off the line and walked down the hill to Derrick Martin at Accuracy Speaks. He took the rifle apart, squeezed the upper and the lower back together (he's done more than a few like this), replaced the bolt and I was back in business. Unlike yours the BC on mine did not crack.

Take a ride out to Accuracy Speaks and have Derrick look at it. Unless there is a crack in the upper or worse he will make it good as new.

I thought over charge too but it was factory ammo. I guess it could happen. Never though about squeezing the upper back together. If that works I would only need a bolt carrier group.

Thanks!

I would talk to Windham Weapons customer service first. They will probably warranty the whole upper out

If this was just blatantly off-topic, I wouldn't have done anything, but you put it in the classified ads...

Previous owner was not sure. He thought it was American Eagle.

Maybe. Since it did not happen to me and I don't not know all the details they might not. I am only going by what the previous owner said. Who know what really happened.

I will give them a call. Otherwise if I can get an inexpensive bolt carrier group I will have a great truck gun for cheap!

I wouldn't sweat using the lower and carrier. You can't always see damage to the barrel with your eye so I'd be cautious. I'd just grab a PSA upper with the FN barrel on a daily deal.

With black Friday deals around the corner I'd just get a completr upper. Won't know if there's headspacing issues, hairline cracks or what.

Carrier and bolt are gone for sure. Tried to squeeze the upper back into shape but it is too distorted. Will keep an eye out for a used upper and BCG or wait for a Black Friday special. Thanks for the input!

All factory ammo is not good. I built a 93 Mauser into a 7.62X39 and was firing steel cased ammo (don't recall the brand)thru my Chrony. Most shots were around 2,300 fps. Then one went thru at over 2,600 fps. Locked up the bolt and had to use a dead blow hammer to open it. Primer was smeared out about double in size and most of the headstamp was gone. Gun was not damaged at all.
There went my plan to have a gun to shoot cheap steel cased ammo thru. I rebarreled it to 7X57.

Most common cause of this is a round with out powder then a round with powder. This means the the first bullet lodged up in the barrel and the operator didn't check the bore and fired another round.
