I recently acquired a Mossberg 500 with 18 inch barrel.
I didn't didn't do any formal inspection, but the action worked OK.
When I got it home I found out that when I put 5 in the magazine tube, I found that the spring and follower gets stuck all the way forward in the tube.
Now when I can get the spring uncaught, by poking a stick through where the barrel fastens in, I find that the follower stops about just a half an inch from being pushed all the way tight.
Could this just be a weak spring from years of having 5 rounds waiting in the tube?
I was hoping it was just dirty, so I took it apart.
I have broken it all the way down to the tube and receiver, and can't get the tube unscrewed if it were to save my life. I've even soaked it with a little mystery oil. Mainly because I can't find Kroil in this town.
I see these easily being screwed off on YouTube. So I'm hoping that when I can figure out how to get this screwed off, a.new spring and follower will make this work like new again.

It should unscrew easily with your fingers. Throw some more oil in there.
I agree with the new parts.
The problem is that someone tried to get the magtube off with pliers, and made two small dents in the tube, therefore hindering the movement of the follower halfway down. You'll need a replacement mag tube.

I actually reefed on it with some rubber mat grippy stuff and couldnt get it to budge.
After getting to someone with loads of tools, we heated it up, and it seemed to have something like red locktite, that wasn't red, and some rubbery stuff, like teflon tape.
Some people do the weirdest shit.
Any ways, it came off with heat, not a bit of rust in there. And the problem was that someone tried to get the magtube off with pliers, and made two small dents in the tube, therefore hindering the movement of the follower halfway down. So I am going to find a replacement mag tube, and put it up for sale.
I had originally intended to make a mag fed receiver project out of this, but decided to spend an extra $150 or so, and build one from scratch.

I had that happened to me on 3 of the 500s ive had. Swapped springs, cleaned buffed out tube, oiled etc but problems persisted. Ended up being the stock metal follower canting/binding. So now my Mossbergs have Choate Followers problem solved. Only one I had to trim the follower cause it would limit me to 4rds instead of the 5

A lot of times the mag tube is loc-tited in place. Use a strap wrench and try not to mar the finish too badly.

Lots of folks make upgraded followers if the follower is indeed bent.
