Shooting a newly assembled AR, ran great for about 6 rounds then jammed a quarter inch out of battery. Couldn't budge the bolt by hand so I did the ol' butt to the ground trick and it unlocked and spat out a round but ran back a quarter inch out of battery and I couldn't get it to budge again. We were done for the day with this one.

Got it home and had to beat the bolt into battery to separate the halves of the rifle. The bolt was stuck in there good. I couldn't get the bolt all the way back to get the cam pin out. Strange thing is, the bolt seemed to turn in the hole without any trouble. Beat the bolt back and got the cam pin out and the bolt would spin freely in the carrier. It just wouldn't move forward or backward. Ended up beating it out with a punch. When it came out I didn't notice anything flying out with it. Once I got it out the gas rings looked good and nothing was broken. The extractor was in it's proper place. Slid the bolt back in and it was fine. Threw the rifle back together and it seems to function perfectly. WTF?

Is this a common occurrence or is this just odd?

Is this a purchased rifle or one you built? Use an empty case to see if it has issues again now that seems to be working again.

Were you shooting reloads or factory?

Factory ammo on a gun I assembled. I couldn't find the empty it flung out last so I'm not sure if that case was whole. The upper and bolt were purchased together from the same company so I'm guessing they matched OK.

small piece of debris? My brother and I built AR's and ordered the parts together. His kept acting up. Eventually disassembled his bolt and found it full of machining grit. It never had been cleaned! Cleaned and reassembled and all is good. It wouldn't have taken much to cause it to jam.

You notice any wear marks? Since it's new and hasn't been used much there shouldn't be any.

My 308 did this early on. It was a mix of 2 things. 1st was a blown primer that somehow wedged itself between the bolt and locking lugs. Just random dumb luck.

The other 1 that caused this a few times is the chamber for my rifle barrel is really tight on the saami min spec. The case gauge i had was on the max saami side. Once I figured that out and ran the brass through at saami min, no issues. Definitely use a small base die if you reload.

Its just odd because the bolt would turn freely in the carrier it just wouldn't move frontwards or backwards. Took it out again a few days ago and it runs fine. ?????????????????????????????????
