I'm glad I read this thread. I building a 7.62x39 AR using Midway's Stoner upper. I've read reviews that said the gas port was too small and that some will short cycle. Reviewers recommended drilling the gas port. Instead of drilling it out, I am going to get an adjustable gas block for it and see if the tuning will help before drilling it out. If it still short cycles on full open, I'll drill it out.

I built an AR pistol with a 7.5" barrel and it is so light that recoil was a bitch. I installed an adjustable gas block and tuned it getting the recoil down to a more manageable level.

It is understandable that manufacturers tend to over gas their rifles and uppers so that they are reliable. This, however, does maximize recoil which is no fun. Especially on my 68 year old shoulder.
