First a little background. I've build a bunch of 80% AR15s. Real easy. Three Polymer80 Spectre "Glocks". Super easy. 80% 10/22-easy with a little help.

I want to build a 1911, but investing in all that tooling for one (maybe two) guns is just not cost effective. I'm looking for a machinist or gunsmith that could help me with the machining operations (barrel seat, decking, slide rails, frame holes) for a fee.

I'm willing to drive up to Phoenix or 100+ miles from Tucson. Any takers? BTW, tooling, either from Stealth Arms or 1911 builders (Matrix Precision) is over $300.00.

Thanks

It would be much less money and time to just purchase a finished 1911 frame with slightly oversized slide rails. I was in a similar position as you several years ago and decided to go with a Caspian 1911 frame. You can find these on Caspian's website and at Brownells. The frame and FFL transfer fee brought the frame cost in at around $250. I personally fit the slide to the frame, that took probably 16+ hours, maybe more, but I was using a 1911 frame fitting file and marking fuild to fit it perfectly. I was likely much slower than most since I was learning how to do it. I discovered how easy it could be to misalign a slide on a frame if you were not careful.

The time, tooling, and skill to finish an 80% 1911 frame are steep. Why not go with a finished 1911 frame?

For me, its all about doing it myself. No markings, no serial numbers, all mine.
