For all around use . . . 30-06.
My cousin has taken just about everything that North America has to offer with his 30-06 (not grizzly yet). Not to mention I have books from Whelen (worked @ the Frankfort Arsenal) and Hatcher (worked at the Aberdeen facility). Both did a lot of hunting as well as military research. They both are strong advocates of 30-06.
The best thing Townsend Whelen did for hunters was necking up the 06 to 35 caliber. The 35 Whelen a wildcat cartridge for many years was finally recognized by SAAMI and loaded commercially after his passing. There has been plenty of speculation if Whelen actually designed it or was named after him by a close friend.
