Hi all,

New to the forum, not new to AZ. A little about myself, I am a long time shooter (novice) having grown up in gun friendly AZ. I am 40. I own a .22 colt pistol and a very old bolt action .22 rifle (dads old rifle). These have been fun for very casual shooting and will remain in the collection.

I plan to do ALOT of camping this summer in AZ, I would like to include some shooting in these trips as well as defense capabilities. I do not like to hike/camp in remote areas unarmed. I would like to find a pistol/rifle combo that is higher in caliber and effective for both target shooting and have enough stopping power to be capable as defensive weapons.

I have done some research but thought I would reach out to my own neighbors in this state to get some feedback.

Initially, I am drawn to the affordability and simplicity of the hi-point 9mm Carbine rifle and Handgun option. I love the fact that they share the same magazine but am not so thrilled on the capacity. Here is the link:

Again, I am a casual enthusiast. I don't need the highest and best to start and the wallet is a factor. Ease of use, simplicity and easy to maintain come to play as well.

Do you have any feedback on the high point and any pros and cons on caliber? Should I be considering even a .22 Cal combo option?

Thanks Neighbors!

You can also do this with a Glock and a Mech-Tech carbine upper.
Or you can use a Glock and a Keltec Sub 2000.

Most people will flame you for posting hi-point, as they are not really know for accuracy/reliability/quality/longevity.
But then they also have a lifetime guarantee and are cheap.

Having the same caliber and mag is nice, but in the end it will matter less.
A rifle in a pistol caliber is just not the same as a rifle in a rifle caliber. And if hunting, you will have to have at least .357mag or .44mag if you really need a pistol caliber the same as your handgun, and I know of nothing that share the same magazine in these two calibers. You could go old school and have a revolver and lever action, those are fun :)

Great insight Electro.

Keltec looks like a nice option. Not sure about the upper because the point would be to have 2 operating fire arms at the same time.

I guess the whole caliber/clip sharing is my AZ cowboy mentality... but I am not a cowboy =)

I guess Hi-Point has good marketing to the novice [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

I'd go with a Ruger or S&W .357 revolver (I'm not real keen on the less expensive makes, but that's just me)

and for a rifle;

just about any carbine length AR-15 (collapsable stock and 16" barrel). Even the Plum Crazy lower built guns should be plenty adequate.
