Thinking about how it works, could a Lee crimp die that is for 300 Blackout also be used on 308, 300 win, etc? or vice versa

No, it is specifically how it works that makes it unusable for just about anything else. The Lee FCD dies for rifles work on the length of the case of the loaded round. So the .300 BO FCD will work with other rounds as long as they are the same length of the .300 BO and use a .30 cal bullet. So the only other round it will work with is the 30/221.

Regular and taper crimp dies could sometimes work the way you are thinking but in the case of a .300 BO taper crimp die it will still not work because the die body is drilled for a 223 sized case and a .308 will not go into the die enough to reach the crimping part. For example, a .308 taper crimp die will work for crimping a 30-06 round because it is basically a lengthened .308 but it won't work for a .300 WM because the body of the WM case is a larger diameter.

No they are specific to that round. They crimp when the shell plate hits the bottom of the die and squeezes the collet..

That makes sense...I didn't think through what actually initiates the collet.

If you're squeezing pennies. Hornady makes both 22 and 30 cal universal crimp dies.

FWIW, I recently found out that the Lyman M Die for 30 Carbine works well for 300 BLK. Nice if you're loading cast bullets in 300 BO.

Is this for expanding the mouth a bit?

Yes, the M die is a two stage neck expander. The first step expands the neck to the needed inner diameter and the next step opens the neck just slightly over to give a funnel effect but not like a normal 45 degree neck expander.

RCBS also makes a die similar to the Lyman M die. Some slightly shorter cases can be crimped with the Lee FCD by placing a washer as a spacer on the shellholder. Very limited use this way though. Same can be done with the Lee collett die.
