Oh man i want one of these, the gophers out west are rediculous! Wife says no, something about cracking the foundation on the house. Guess I will have to rely on the irrigation to drown the little buggers.

My method is nowhere near as cool as that.
However, it is just as deadly. And silent.

What is your secret? Gophers are taking over here. I have several of that type of trap, but my success ratio is poor. Oldtimers here suggested putting the trap inside the hole, then covering it, with a small leak for light. Mostly I find the trap packed with dirt.

That little bit of light is B.S.
I cover the hole with a piece of particle board or plywood and cover it with dirt so NO light gets in.
Also, wear gloves when you set your traps. Be sure to get your gloves dirty with the dirt you are digging in to help hide your scent.
Another little trick I use is to cut a leaf off of one of my tomatoe plants and toss it in there as bait.
When I first started I was told to let a little bit of light in and I never got anything. Found exactly what you did. Dirt.
After trying the complete cover up, I come up with a body EVERY time [smilie=icon_mrgreen.gif]

Hope this helps. Let me know how it works for you.
Happy hunting!

been doin it as you said since I was a little kid and works as advertised, not as much fun as the gas bombs but you can't argue with the success.

You know what's funny though?
Since posting, the last traps I put out, I got skunked on all of them [smilie=icon_mrgreen.gif]
I think they're on to me!
They were here before we moved in and they're all over the neighborhood. We get irrigation so they love it. Easy digging, and no, they willl not get flooded out by the water.
The war goes on. I have gotten so many that I've lost count but overall, this technique has been pretty effective but as you say, nowhere near as exciting as exploding gas! :D

Couldn't you just get an acetylene tank (far more violent explosion than propane, but you WILL need hearing protection), some 1/2" tubing, and fill the holes, then detonate it? Seems like it'd be a lot cheaper that way.

For those of you who haven't played with Acetylene, here's a few videos that will make you smile when you imagine that being in the gopher holes.
