Has any one ever hunted in AZ with a handgun. I would like to know what caliber, barrel length and what species. It seems like handgun hunting here would be challenging. Also given how hard it is to get drawn for anything here,it would be hard not to use a rifle. As far as I know the only designated pistol hunt would be the HAM hunts.

I would only really use a handgun to hunt javelina. Anything else would be pretty difficult.

Rabbit and squirrel with a Glock 17.
Couple snakes, same gun if I remember right.
Coon with a 1911A1, .45
I have done more but my brain hurts right now, I'll post as I remember.

I have used .44 mag and .357 mag for both deer and javelina. They were both 8 inch barrels with iron sights. You can use a pistol in the HAM hunt or in the general rifle hunt if you want.

Prairie dogs with a T/C Contender. It's more shooting than hunting, and pretty humbling.
Lots of fun, though.

Javilina with a 6in Python or a S&W 686. Open sights with success. [smilie=icon_mrgreen.gif]

I got a Javelina HAM tag and I'll be using a Glock 29.

Shot a Hogalina and a few snakes with a USPTacticool .45. Lots of rabbits with .22 and .38 in the 686.

For just about any big game, the distances you'll be shooting and time frame between getting drawn, you should probably be using and Encore or Contender set up with a bottle necked cartidge.
