Some NRA affiliated ranges have training by this organization.

Consider finding a CCW instructor (coughHansencough) who will let the youngster "audit" the class, with no intention of applying for the permit.

Recently I met this woman, and was invited to observe one of her classes, and was impressed with her instructing:

This is the problem I have seemed to run into. That and most require 18 years of age, even for self defense class's. and yes I understand the liability issues with someone young(under 18) so not complaining about it.

Last Defensive Pistol class we taugh had a 16yo student with his father. He was a first-timer. The kid outshot everyone at the end. You might want to look into that. My wife and I will be teaching the Women's Defensive Pistol class.

To purchase a handgun you have to be 21. Not sure how an 18 year old would be able to find a class for handguns let alone someone under 18.
We are considered adults at 18 so maybe there is some sort of liability avoidance under that concept. Just my curious mind.

True that, but there's no legal precedence, to my knowledge, that precludes a minor from taking a firearms class with a loaned weapon if the responsible party is in agreement. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My kids (currently 11 and 16) are in 4-H shooting sports. While it may not be the type of class you are looking for, the cover the basics and introduce kids that may not otherwise have the opportunity to firearms. They cover archery, pistol, rifle, shotgun and muzzleloader. With parental permission, waivers, etc. kids are allowed to use just about anything.

Watch Molly Smith shooting her revolver at age 13: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asGyOmjb5x8
She is probably 17 or 18 now, a member of Team Smith & Wesson.

Also check out her YouTube videos, and also http://www.mollyminute.blogspot.com

Molly won the Bianchi Cup revolver division -- not in her age class, not "women," but all revolver shooters -- with a score of 1910.

Last updated September 30, 2016.

Arizona prohibits any person from selling or giving a firearm or ammunition or a toy pistol from which dangerous and explosive substances may be discharged to a person under age 18 without written consent of the minor’s parent or legal guardian.1

Arizona law prohibits an unemancipated person under age 18 from knowingly carrying or possessing a firearm on his person, within his immediate control, or in or on a means of transportation, in any place that is open to the public or on any street or highway or on any private property (except private property owned or leased by the minor or the minor’s parent, grandparent or guardian). This prohibition does not apply if the minor is accompanied by a parent, grandparent, or guardian, or a certified hunter safety instructor or certified firearms safety instructor acting with the consent of the unemancipated person’s parent or guardian.2

This prohibition also does not apply to a person who is 14 to 17 years of age and who is:

Engaged in lawful hunting or shooting events or marksmanship practice at an established range or other area where the discharge of a firearm is not prohibited;
Engaged in lawful transportation of an unloaded firearm for the purpose of lawful hunting;
Engaged in lawful transportation of an unloaded firearm between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. for the purpose of shooting events or marksmanship at an established range or other area where the discharge of a firearm is not prohibited; or
Engaged in an activity requiring the use of a firearm that is related to the production of crops, livestock, poultry, livestock products, poultry products, or ratites or in the production or storage of agricultural commodities.3

Arizona places no additional restrictions on the purchase or possession of handguns, although federal age restrictions still apply.

The age of 21 only applies if you are purchasing a firearm through an FFL. It is perfectly legal in Arizona to purchase a handgun from a private party at the age of 18. We teach minors all the time. As was stated earlier the parents are usually attending the course also and of course all the legal waivers and consent forms are signed.
