Will 55gr ammo work well with this barrel, or is 55gr too light?

I have searched around a bit and seems like the 1 in 7 works well for heavier projectiles, but haven't been able to find much about lighter projectiles...

Works fine. It's faster than you need for that weight, but I use XM193 (55gr FMJ) and all may barrels are either 1:7 or 1:8. Does well enough to ring the smaller steel gongs at the 200 yard line at Rio (does the big 300 yard gong as well, but it's a pretty big piece of steel).

Lighter ammo (45gr., 50 gr.) may fragment out of a 1:7 bbl.

Often AR's with fast twist barrels will have a smaller gas port so they function better with heavies. Hence, it may not cycle properly with 55's. Other than that it should shoot fine.

I have a Colt govt. 20" 1/7 twist barrel that will shoot 55gr to 69gr bullets into dime size groups all day long at 100yds. I wish all 223/5.56 barrels were 1/7 twist, because all my 1/9 twist barrels suck. My 24" 1/9 twist barrel will shoot 45gr to 52gr under 1" at a 100yds, but 55gr bullets open the group to 1.5+ at 100yds and 62gr bullets are even worse. :(
