I'm looking at a Springfield SAR 4800/48 Match FAL. I know its history, but there is limited hands on info about this gun.

Does anyone have any experience with one, accuracy, reliability, and what modifications were done by springfield to the imbel import, and what price range *should* they be in?

I can't answer most of your questions but I can tell you a friend of mine has one and he has shot the $hit out of it and loves it. I have fired it as well and despite having been used and abused very heavily it remains accurate and reliable.

I don't know what they go for these days but since a patient shopper can pick up a new DSA gun for + or - $1300 (Got mine for $1150) I can't imagine paying more than $1k for a used gun in this family.

I'd be looking at prices a little over $1K, based on what they've been selling for in the last couple of years.

The SAR 4800 is a "factory" FAL from a licenced manufacturer. That said it's not really any better than some of the best assembled FrankenFALs out there. I guess there may be some collector value if the gun is LNIB. But that's all. Between a parts gun assembled to spec from an Imbel receiver on an unissued STG58 kit, and a SAR 4800, I'd choose based on price.

Just get a DSA, they are no where as expensive as they used to be, check AIM for the DSA Imbel kits on DSA reciever, they are a sweet deal, just wait for them to get stock

The SAR 4800 was manufactured as a new rifle on licensed FN machinery by trained machinists according to specs. Many franken-FAL's were cobbled together in a garage by a hobbyist. (I'm NOT referring to some of our well known smiths which turn out excellent work and have put together hundreds of FALs, I consider these as custom guns). Even at a few hundred difference which would you rather shoot?
Before you start flaming me, I have built 5 FAL kits and own a SAR 4800. I know what the kits looked like originally and what went into getting them functional. I like the SAR and my STG kit best. The Imbel kit wasn't bad, the G1, South African and Rhodesian were really used (beat). I would really like to have a DSA para.

Springfield did not do anything to them but import them and then sell them.

FWIW, the Springfield fals were the best factory made non FN fals before DSA became a player.
As the other person stated, you should check their guns out before you decide.
