Phoenix combats violence with 3 walks, firearm buyback

by Jahna Berry - Jun. 11, 2009 04:18 PM
The Arizona Republic

Phoenix leaders and residents are planning to hold three anti-violence walks in the South Mountain and Maryvale neighborhoods on Saturday.

Also, at a related event, Phoenix police plan to offer $50 gift cards to residents who turn in firearms.

The weekend activities are part of a city campaign to decrease gun violence, city spokesman Michael Hammett said.

There is "community interest to get the message out there about ending random violence and shootings," Hammett said.

Faith groups and City Council members, including Tom Simplot, Michael Nowakowski and Michael Johnson, will participate in the 1-mile Steps to Stop Gun Violence walks.

On the same day, Phoenix police will accept guns from people who wish to turn them in anonymously. No questions will be asked, Hammett said.

Guns will be accepted at four locations, but there is a limited supply of gift cards. The cards will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, the spokesman said.

It was unclear what kind of gift cards would be distributed, but Hammett said that the gift cards would be for Phoenix retailers.

This the second year that the city has held events for the Keep Your Family Safe campaign. Last year, police collected 122 firearms.

$50 isn't even worth bending an AK flat and trying to pass it off as a firearm.

Brainstorm:

Buy a bunch of cheap .22 barrels from Nuemrich's, throw a round in each one & wrap the chamber in duct tape & a rubber band. Turn it in as a zip gun & make $$$. :D

Wow seriously a $50 gift card? What criminal is going to really want to give up a gun for a $50 gift card to Frys or some other retailer. I really wish I could host my own gun buyback program.

Maybe we should set up a booth across the street and offer $75.

[smilie=anim_bannana.gif] I think this would be so much more effective if one turned in a gangster instead of a gun!! [smilie=anim_bounce.gif]

Or $51.00. You know the economy is in trouble when politicians are being cheap with tax dollars.

Shoulda seen me last time they had one of these [smilie=icon_mrgreen.gif] . Walked away with a great Bersa Thunder and a Ruger MK2 22/45 for two gift cards. Alan Corwin picked up a Chinese Tokarev for a C-note as well.
