I tried to go there yesterday and there was a new gate at the hole in the fence off Houghton. Anyone know what happened, or if it's been closed permanently? I had heard it was going to be closed because one of the cattle got shot. Anyone know of any other places to shoot in the desert, out that way? I usually go home with more trash than I brought with me.

The only "pit" location in that area is off the Sonoita exit. North of I-10, a few miles past the RR bridge. I haven't been out there in a while, but a friend told me signage was recently posted for NO SHOOTING. If your in that area just go to the range by the fairgrounds.

When I lived on the east side of town I went there all the time. Never had an issue getting there. Wish I could find something like that on the Northwest side of town. Pima Pistol is fine, but sometimes I just wanna go and chase a can with the kids rather than punch holes in paper.

That whole area has been getting more and more saturated with shooters over the past few years. Good to see more people shooting, but with more people, usually means more asshattery unfortunately.

That's one of the main reasons I go. Take my son out there, toss a few cans out and shoot them with the .22 until they're twisted and take them home. That and not liking some of the range officers at SERP, waiting 15 minutes to go donwrange and only shoot paper, and paying $8 per person to shoot there.

If you are talking about the area east of Houghton, about a mile in, I have been there quite a bit recently (I shoot my bow along the power lines right when you go in) and I haven't noticed anything.

Where is the new gate you are talking about?

It's more like new fencing at the old gate off Houghton. They put up some new chain link and it looked like a new gate that was closed last time. It was open today.

As a side note, is anyone interested in getting together to do some cleaning down there? I have an SUV so I can haul out trash, but nothing big.

I do believe that is within the city limits, if you believe the city maps.

Or maybe I'm thinking of the wrong place?
There was a thread about it here roughly a year ago warning not to go there.
I used to go to a gravel pit further east on Marsh Station rd, but that is now marked as state trust land. [smilie=anim_banghead.gif]

The pit I am thinking of is at the very edge of city annexed land by Vail, but it's remote so no one bothers anyone. Now with the new hunting rules that allow hunting in areas like that, less likely to be bothered.

I can help with a cleanup, I have a trailer and pickup. I hauled a bunch of stuff out of there last year. Someone dumped a motor boat in there one time, then burned it up a few weeks later.

We should try to organize something for after all the hunting seasons are over.

I know where the one on Marsh station is I think, because there a bunch of "shooting" areas on that road. The one I am thinking of is in a municipal unit anyway, but it doesn't stop anyone.

So that's what that is. On the east side of the entrance ramp, the big piles of burnt junk was a boat? When do the hunting seasons end? This one is my favorite place to shoot, but I'm for organizing a clean up at any or all of the Tucson area places.

I'll be happy to help out with any local shooting spot cleanups too.
