Hi all, I don't know if this is the right forum but It is somewhat CCW related. We have a debate going on a fishing site I frequent.
The question is: Can an 18yr old openly carry? Also, can it be partially concealed if holstered?

Thanks in advance,
John

Looks like we have some of the questions answered.
Here's the thread http://www.azbasszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88002
My name at AZBZ is johnr. Wear some thick skin over here though. It's a fun site.

BTW, nice site you guys have. I stop by every now and then mostly to look in the for sale section.

John

The question isn't whether an 18 year old can open carry, but is there a law prohibiting it.

There is not.

That's why nobody can ever find the law "allowing" it. The law (both federal and state) is silent on it, therefore it's permitted.

Tell DellW he is wrong. I have no idea where they get the "21 y/o unless with an adult" thing.

+2. He is dead wrong on that one.

EDIT: I just realized how stupid that statement was. "21 unless with an adult". Keyword being "adult". Think about it....

I'll take the bait and stir the pot a bit.

So an 18 year old can open carry but not purchase a handgun? Or purchase ammo?

It would seem logical that if a 18 year old can not purchase then it would be illegal to possess a handgun.

While it is certainly possible that it is legal for an 18 year old to carry a handgun his father loaned him, it would also be reasonable to presume that if an 18 year old were carrying a handgun by him or herself, he or she possessed it.

So the issue would seem to be primarily the legality of possession right?

The answer would also have implications for 'gifting or buying handguns' for minors and even 18, 19 & 20 year olds.

There are laws about buying firearms for people who can not legally possess them.

An 18 yr. old can purchase (and carry) a handgun through a private seller but not from a dealer. To buy from a dealer (ffl) you need to be 21. To carry concealed with a CCW; you also need to be 21. You can OC at 18.

You are applying "logic" to the LAW. [smilie=anim_chair.gif]

Regardless, an 18 year old may purchase a firearm, he simply may not purchase one from a licensed dealer. (FFL)

Except a Maine CCW (or any non-AZ CCW) isn't valid for carry in Arizona by an Arizona resident, per ARS 13-3112.
