while ya might think what you said is witty, i don't believe you can seriously equate the "need" to drive a car to the need to defend yourself.

Woosh. The point being that the reasons you want to do those things doesn't go away. You ability to effectively do those things may be impaired though. You said that you'd take the lawsuit, how about the fact that you shot an innocent person? The chance of that happening goes up since alcohol impairs judgement as well as motor skills.

i don't see how you are making the jump to me shooting an innocent person from carrying while drinking. my gun doesn't jump out of its holster and "go off" on its own while drinking any more than it does when i'm sober. though, you say my judgment might be impaired, but not to that extent.

if someone threatens my life, i'd like the option to defend it, regardless of whether i chose to drink or not. saying that position is "stupid", is pretty stupid.

I don’t carry if I go out drinking. It is my choice to go out drinking. Just because you have the right to carry doesn't mean you should in this scenario. It’s no different than drinking and driving as you could hurt or kill someone else due to your impairment and not necessarily in self defense. Miss handle the weapon when you go to the bathroom for example. Your impaired and not in complete control. Dumber things have happened.
You can argue right to defend yourself all day long, you also have the responsibility to be a smart and safe gun owner. When have you ever heard alcohol and firearms mix?
This is Darwin looking for a place to go.

WOW! i can't believe the the morality push upon others :s .

does it really matter if the person that protected their life was intoxicated or sober? really? so the intoxicated one has less rights as the sober person?

does it really matter if someone who carried shot an innocent person whether they were intoxicated or sober. the end result is the same. should the sober person be less responsible? really? does it make it less traumatic if the person was sober?

all are responsible for what they do when they do it.

this also goes for the people that put up the drinking and driving scenario. must be a breath of freash air knowing that the one you loved was killed by a sober person. [smilie=anim_banghead.gif]

This is one of those very personal choices that we all have to make for ourselves. For me, I'm always armed. Always. Right or wrong, it's just how it is and it's a philosophical discussion at best to say who is "right". And that includes if I'm out and about or after having a few Guiness'. Then again, I know myself. I don't do stupid shit while drinking and I don't get all F'd up in public. If I'm planning on knocking back a bottle of Bombay sapphire with friends, I do it at home when I'm not going to be carrying. In public, I mind my own business and don't turn into an idiot when I've had a few, but knowing your limitations and knowing when to limit yourself is key, in my opinion. I also know that I can't predict when trouble will find me, and that should a shooting ensue, I know from my own personality and behavior that I'm not the person instigating it, merely responding to it. With that in mind, I also understand and accept the downside to responding to a deadly force situation thrust upon me after having had a few. I would much rather have to deal with the civil legal aftermath and explain my position than to either wind up dead, or worse, have to live with myself if, for instance, my wife were to get hurt or worse and I wasn't in a position to intercede. I don't think I could deal with that kind of guilt personally. For instance, we had a supervisor in my agency get murdered not long ago while he was at a conference in New Orleans. He was doing what is preached to us, i.e. leave your smokepole at the hotel if you're going to be drinking. On the way to the bar to meet up with some of our other agents, he was jumped by three perps and beaten to death in an alley. Actually he didn't die right away, it took a few days in a coma before he went. I choose not to let that happen to me. That's just me.

I have been looking for a answer to this question for a while. I was under the impression that once you have any alcohol you aren't allowed to carry. I don't like to go get hammered or blacked out at bars but I do like to enjoy a beer while I eat. Not being able to protect myself outweighs drinking so I just haven't had a beer with my meal since i started carrying. I am glad my question is finally answered and I will now enjoy a beer with my meal whenever I please and also have the reassurance that I can protect myself if need be.

Unless that beer is in a restaurant. If you're carrying on an on-site licensee, you cannot consume alcohol, period. If you're having that beer at home or some other private location, that's fine.

Read those ARS I reference above...it's clearly spelled out.
