My cousin is here for a month and he would like to do some desert shooting. Anyone know any good, legal spots in the desert to shoot around Phoenix or Maricopa. A spot with some distance would be nice too.

I go out to table mesa road. It is a few miles north of anthem so a bit of a drive from anywhere but north phoenix. I think the spot is great you just get off on table mesa, turn left then take your first right and you are on a dirt road. There are several hills you can shoot into. I have never been out there and not seen at least 2 other groups at various shooting spots along the road. Fun spot

You might want to check the area for closures first, no sense you driving all that way for nothing? [smilie=icon_rolleyes.gif] If all else fails then just take him to the range.

Thanks Pike Pole71.

I'm fairly certain that Table Mesa is closed until at least July 31st (or when they decide to remove the fire restriction)

There's a spot out west of Lake Pleasant on Carefree Hwy/74. you can also go out to 339th ave west of the valley. either way, it's a bit of a trek. hit up BA if you want something closer.

All central AZ BLM lands are closed due to fire danger. You can check BLM info here: http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en.html.

And This AM's Rag has notice from Tonto Nat Forest, where they will be closed on Friday due to high fire danger.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/home.shtml

That means no target shooting, no open fires, etc:

So there is NO desert shooting in around the greater Phoenix Area.

With the summer closures now in effect, your best bet is Ben Avery or Rio Salado... or you could drive down to the Casa Grande range.

Are there signs at table mesa saying it is closed? I was out there about a week or so ago and saw nothing saying it was closed. Not doubting it is closed if you guys say it is, just wondering if I was doing something wrong / wondering how much effort they put into letting people know sites are closed

There often are not, and when they do go up, the gang banger wannabes and other low life scum bags shoot them up.

If you have been shooting out at Table Mesa since May 21st, you shooting illegally.

I was out at Table Mesa Rd. this past Sunday. While to be safe, I went out beyond the boundary so that I was on private land and out of the BLM's grasp,...no one else seemed to care and there was people everywhere. No rangers or deputies to be seen.
